OpenAI Announces First India Office in New Delhi Amid Growing AI Adoption
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, will establish its inaugural Indian office in New Delhi later this year. The MOVE capitalizes on India's position as the second-largest user base for ChatGPT globally, trailing only the United States.
The New Delhi hub will serve as a collaborative center for engagements with the Indian government, educational institutions, and businesses under the IndiaAI Mission. OpenAI aims to develop cost-effective AI tools tailored to local needs, backed by Microsoft's strategic investment.
CEO Sam Altman highlighted India's "world-class developer ecosystem" and government support as foundational elements for AI leadership. The expansion begins with building a local team around Pragya Mishra, currently OpenAI's sole India-based employee.
